Bhai Dooj Significance and Rituals
It is the festival of brother-sister affection, and they wait for this auspicious festival with great enthusiasm, spirit and charm. During this day, sisters keep fast, worship and recite Katha. They put “tilak” on their brothers’ forehead, and it is believed that they pray to Yama for their brothers’ long life, and their brothers should be free from all the evil forces. The brothers also give gifts to their sisters and pledge to safeguard and protect them.
As per the genuine astrologer, the sisters should decorate the Puja thali with lamps, flowers, akshat, fruits and sweets. Then a diya of ghee or lamp should be lighted, and aarti should be performed by the sisters of their brothers. Then, after considering the auspicious time, tilak should be applied to the brothers’ forehead.
