Shree Krishna Janmashtami: Significance & Rituals
In Vrindavan and Mathura, this festival of Krishna Janmashtami has great significance. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and spent his childhood in both Vrindavan and Mathura. Due to this reason, the child form of Lord Krishna is worshipped on this day with Makhan-Mishri, Panchamrit, Gangajal, etc. There is also a ritual of placing “Ladoo Gopal” in the cradle and swinging it at midnight. Moreover, Krishna Devotees observe a long-day fast on this day. Some have only fruits while some have one meal the whole day.
On this day, the devotees of Lord Krishna decorate their homes with flowers, lights, and diyas. All the temples are illustrated in the most lavish and colorful styles. Makhan-Mishri, as well as the sweets made of coconut, are offered to Lord Krishna at this festival. Bhagwat Gita and Bhajans are recited on this day. Devotees also celebrate this festival through plays or skits or by putting up beautiful “Jhankis.” In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi is being organized on the local and regional scales. In every state of the nation, this festival is celebrated with great pomp and glory. This festival must be celebrated with great devotion and faith per the genuine astrologer.
