The Bhai Dooj festival, like Raksha Bandhan, is celebrated all across the country to foster the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. It falls on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, i.e., on the second day after the Diwali celebrations and after Govardhan Pooja. It is also called the Yama Dwitiya. In Maharashtra & Gujarat, it is known as Bhau Beej and Bhai Phonta in Bengal. This year it will be celebrated on 6th November 2021, Saturday. On this holy day, sisters apply tilak on the forehead of their brothers and pray for their success, prosperity, happiness and long life. It has great significance and importance for sisters as they wait for this festival with great charm. During this whole day, sisters worship and keep fast and recite Katha and put tilak on their brother’s forehead. It is believed that the sisters, on this day, pray to Yama for the long life of the brothers. Similarly, brothers also pledge to protect and safeguard their sisters and give them gifts. Considering astrology, the auspicious time for tilak to their brothers is between 1:10 PM and 3:21 PM, which signifies that the whole Muhurat is for 2 hours and eleven minutes. Sisters should decorate the Puja thali with flowers, lamps, Akshat, sweets and fruits. Then she should light the lamp or diya of ghee and perform the Aarti of him. Then, tilak should be applied on the forehead after considering the auspicious time. Then, she should offer sweets to him, and brothers provide gifts to their sister. Happy Bhai Dooj to everyone!
